Reaction to Gould

There are some Q&A in his text. For me, the one most impressive is p.10, Q1. One of the reason is that, in our class, this question was the part I was in charge of. The principle reason is that, this question has connection to the contents that we learned in spring term. In the concrete, it relates to Mailend's idea that college professors and students should communicate to society, that is, college should not be ivory towers. Since I confirm this thing again in different text, I learn it more deeply in defferent viewpoint. It was interesting.

”Bread and Roses”, that is a slogan of an American labor movement happened in 1912. They said, “We want bread, but we want roses, too!” For a demand for “a sharing of life’s glories,” in the words of a poem by James Oppenheim, they captured their romance in this slogan (The New York Times). What this incident show is that, for human to live like one, it is indispensable that both “bread”, a symbolic of material affluence and “roses”, symbolic of spiritual richness. Without these two abundances, we cannot exist. (Background)(Source) We should try to demonstrate art’s such ability much more. Therefore, Japanese government should improve their art culture policy from both aspect of supporting artists and art education for children, in order to promote art culture development.

What is the reason to support or protect art? To begin with, we think about the advantage that art bring us. First, as we shown in introduction, art gives people deep, symbolic emotion that can be a foundation of one’s mind. On the occasion of disaster, a lot of people felt relieved by only a scrap of words inscribed in one’s mind, or a note of melody stayed with one. Art plays a role to convey one’s intentions crossing time and place. To contact with art, one can catch the thought of one in remote and distant place, more intuitively and instinctively. In the case of earthquake, art helped people to feel a sense of unity, and relieve one’s loneliness. That is indispensable element: “roses” in order to man live healthy. Second, the highest purpose of art is prolonging our process of perception. As we read in the class, one’s perception is based on one’s experience, and inaccurate thing. We see what we want to see, and we abstract elements of the object unless few elements we can perceive (Fisher).  In our live, we overlook and ignore a lot of object and happening, considering these as ordinariness. More experience we have, more freshness our experience lost through being categorized and labeled, though each experience is on that particular time. That is art to recovery the freshness of experience. For example, there is an attempt by John Cage, a musician. In one of his works, “4’ 33”, when the piece start, he just seat in front of piano, and he never play the piano during the 4minutes and 33 seconds. Yet, to play nothing does not just mean there is no sound. Audiences might hear a lot of kinds of sounds: a little noise, the rustle of clothes, people’s breathing, there own heartbeat. Through “Playing” this piece, John Cage provides the opportunity to realize sounds that people always miss to hear.Till now we show the two advantages of art, then, why art should support and protect? The reason is that, though art has such advantages, especially in Japan, it tends to be overwhelmed by the wave of efficiency and excluded. Therefore, we should consciously support and protect art.

Next, who should be the guardian of art? We try to consider which way Japanese improve their policy toward art, studying policy of France, an art super power. The history of French art policy is the history of success with the cooperation of government and people.   (Source)

As shown above, for Japanese art policy it is necessary that improvement of government’s achievement, so we try to consider concretely what it should do from a two aspect: supporting with artists and education of art. First, we check the supporting system with artists. First, we consider about supporting system for artists.        (Source) Second, about art education, government should think over about these two points. One is that, to increase the opportunity consciously for children to contact with art. In general, the environment of public institutions such museum and concert hall is not suitable for children to touch with art pleasantly and leisurely. If there are crowded, it is dangerous for children. The amount of piece of work displayed once is too large for children and they may get tired. Further more, in the case of museum, the display of picture cannot consider about the height of children. In the case of concert of classic music, it might be avoided thing that being accompanied with children. Yet, if these facts become factor in cutting off children from art, these are unavoidable feature of displaying pieces of work, or these rather must be acceptable elements. Then, it is necessary to make an opportunity for children. For instance, following example is practiced in Mexico, and Japanese government should recommend these attempts (). The other point which government should consider for art education is that, to reduce a burden for appreciation art. More specifically, the rate of student’s discount of ticket should be more raised, especially for college students. In many cases, the rate of college student’s discount is very low, or in worse case, the price of ticket is same as that of working adult. Yet, more opportunity of appreciation art is needed for just college students. The reason is that, in generally college students learned a lot of things from multiple view point than junior high school students or high school students, so they each have original criteria based on such experience, and at same time overlook more things because of that. More experience we have, more things we abstract. The possibility which art provide college students is great.

To conclude, just Japanese government should improve the art policy from both aspects of supporting artists and education of art, against the tendency of Japan to slight art culture. The reason is that, art helps us to rediscovery our daily incident and object that we likely to oversee and ignore. Moreover, in economics, it brings profit as the country have higher culture standard. In order to consider what Japanese government should do, it is effective to refer to French art Policy as an example of successful way. We man can not exist with only bread. Now that we have material affluence, most of Japanese can have bread, we should think about spiritual and cultural richness: roses.

Summer Book Report

Title: 1984

Author: George Orwell

I chose this book because I have read or watched or seen a lot of piece of works influenced by this novel. For Example, "A clockwork Orange" a famous novel written by Anthony Burgess,  "BIG BROTHER" a song composed by Stevie Wonder, and further more. Contents of this book became a well known motif of Distopia novels, and I was interested in this novel, so I thought it is good chance for me to read this book in this summer.

It's rough story is that, If I say very shortly, the main character, Winston, living in a totalitarian country once decided himself to against the power, but he arrested and he was changed his mind to believe what dominant party say. The time is 1984, the place is London. In there, people were controlled by dominant party. Structure of society is completely hierarchy, the top of which is BIG BROTHER, a guise of party. The next rank is Inner Party, Outer Party, the worst class is Proles. It is said "Proles and Animals are free". On the contrary, Party members are strictly controlled by Party. There is the telescreen: two way television, in each member's room and they are observed by Party in anytime when they are awake and sleep. They are not allowed to thinking by themselves and also to memorize practice. Their thought, and memory, is governed by Party using some modern instruments.

This novel was written in 1948-1949, expecting the future ironically. The author actually lived in the age of WW and civil war, and saw the totalitarianism and socialism. When I read this book, I was surprise to author’s deep insight in the posture of world. This book takes the form of novel, but I think I can not clearly say that these incidents written in this book happen only in the imagination. This novel has a lot of meaningful note for danger lies in modern society. Reading this book give us a chance to think about these problem, and we can that because we are not controlled our thought and memory by dominant power yet.

first posting

My summer was very fine! I spend most of my summer vacation for my circle (Modern Music Society: a jazz big band) activities. We have five days activity from 13:00 to 18:00 (or more) in a week,  and during summer we took part in three jazz competition. We went on a training camp for one week, and once, we arranged a camp on Gunma prehecture for purely playing and enjoying.  Through this activities,  we could not only get along with each members, but also contact a friendship with students of other college's big band.

A pleasant summer gone. My main aim of ARW Autumn is,  fixing a soud foundation which we have done since spring term, such clearly showing my own opinion in a correct form.  Then, I think my experience to writing or speaking English is not sufficient, so I should do that.  Above all, I want to enjoy the class.
